Remembered running through a bright sunshiny meadow, grass soft and cool under his bare feet. He's carrying the sword with both hands because he's too small to hold it with one. "Look, look," he's yelling. "I got it!"

Mulevi runs alongside him, barking excitedly and bounding ahead. A gust of wind flattens a long swath of grass in front of him and tiny winged fairies burst from the grasses like startled butterflies. "Alexei!" he calls, smiling.

The fairies rise up and come together, making a vaguely humanoid shape that forms and reforms along the edges, the multicolored wings opening and closing, coming together and then breaking apart. Nikolai laughs and swings the sword clumsily at the makeshift man. The blade passes harmlessly through the cloud of fairies as they split apart with the sound of bells. Mulevi jumps up, snapping at the tiny creatures as they fly away. They grab at his tail and ears, laughing, until he is twisting in a circle trying to catch them.

"You did it!" a voice in the wind says. Nikolai feels as happy as he can ever remember. He lifts the sword up again, sweeping it down hard –
